Castration has been proposed as the punishment for rape in Kano

As the clamour for tighteneing punishment for rape offenders in Nigeria continues, the Kano State National Assembly passed a motion on Wednessday that suggests castration as the punishment for rape offenders in the state.

The motion, which was proposed by Nuradden Alhassan, requested for further ammendent of the state's Penal Code ammendment (NO. 12), Law of 2014.

Alhassan sought for a stricter punishment for rape offenders, saying that the current 14-year punishment is not enough to rehabilitate offenders.

During the plenary, Alhassan said:

"Therefore, I am calling on the House to recall the law and amend it, to provide castration punishment for rapists.

"I believe this is the only measure to be taken to end the rampant cases of rape in our society as it is so worrisome.

I also want to appeal to the House to look into the security challenges so as to strengthen their efforts in tackling the rape cases in the state."

It is reported that during the plenary, a large majority the legislators were unopposed to the motion.
