OAU lecturer placed on half salary for sexual misconduct

The 'sex-for-mark' scandal broke in June 2019 out after a BBC documentary revealed how a professor at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) demands sex from students in exchange for better grades.

Two years ago, a Professor Richard Akindele of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was sentenced to two years imprisonment also being involved in sexual misconduct.

Another lecturer, Olaleye Olabisi, has been accused of sexual misconduct at the same Obafemi Awolowo University after an audio recording revealed how he threatened to fail a female student if she refused to sleep with him.

The 400-level student studying International Relations, Motunrayo Afolayan, had previously failed a Diplomacy course in the 2017/2018 academic session.

She successfully recorded her conversation with the lecturer after going to visit him in his office. The lecturer was heard saying : "I promise you will fail this course three times if you refuse to sleep with me."

But when the results were released, she passed the exam, but she still went ahead to report to school's authority.

The university has responded to this incident, stating that 'the university has vowed not to condone sexual harassment, intimidation or assault' and will set up the panel to investigate the matter.
