A student in his final year from the Faculty of Education in Unilorin was pronounced dead on Monday, after suffering from an illness.
The student, Oyetunde Abdulwahab, was reportedly rushed to the school's clinic by his friend, but instead of the nurses to attend to him, they were questioning the dressing of his friend who brought him. He was putting on a 'ripped jean' - which are restricted in the school.
It is gathered that the school's clinic didn't have oxygen. They had to refer him to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), but died before getting to the hospital because the ambulance itself lacked first aid equipments.
However, the students' affair panel has denied this. It released a statement claiming that the student already died before he was taking into clinic. Here is the statement:
''This is not true at all. He was brought in dead.''
''Interestingly, the friend and everyone around could testify. You think he would be dead at the clinic and everyone would be cool?''
''The man who assisted them from town can also confirm he was brought in dead.''
''Our message to students (on/off campus) has always been to report emergencies to the school clinic (whether registered or not). The clinic has 4 functional ambulances used for this purpose.''
Students have been complaining about the lack of proper medical equipments at the school's clinic. A similar incident occurred about two weeks ago.
