Court jails man for 835 years in prison

A man in Arkansas will never walk in freedom again after being given a double-life sentence plus an 835 year jail term for the shooting of an off-duty police officer.

A Crittenden County Court, on Tuesday, convicted 27-year-old Demarscus Donnell Parker on the charges of first-degree murder, illegally shooting a weapon from a vehicle and 21 other related charges in the shooting of a Forest City officer, Oliver Johnson, in April, 2018.

Oliver Johnson was shot in his house on South Avalon Street in West Memphis during an exchange of gunfires between gang members. He died later in the hospital from the gunshot wounds.

Police arrested Parker and his accomplice, 24-year-old George Henderson, few days after Johnson's death.

On Tuesday, prosecutors argued that Johnson was shooting at a rival gang members and that Johnson was most likely not the target of the gunfire.

But still, the jury wasn't covinced. They suggested to the presiding judge, Judge Randy Philhours, that Parker should be given enough years outright to serve consecutively for 835 years.

His accomplice has pleaded not guilty and is also awaiting trial.
